I've seen and read a lot on the web, badbart, and direct observation about how people play NTN. I posted a table on the NTN Lore page on which I tried to categorize all of the various playing styles.

Most folks describe playing styles using three categories: 1. Cutthroat - for individual play; 2. Team Play; and 3. Borg play. The primary differences being individual vs. team, and reference vs. non-reference.

What I tried to do with the table is further delineate the styles of play to include player goals, and multi-box play. With these new dimensions, the list of styles grows to 15 different styles. I took liberties in naming them. Basically my bias is towards the 1 box per person style of play which I call Solo, buddies or Team play.

Goal - National Ranking
Collective: Win at all costs - multi-box per multi-player teams with organized splitting strategies, designated experts, and drones assisting via computer and manual references. These teams usually have a formalized special language.

Drones: Single-box per player team using references - I couldn't think of anything else to name this type of team.

Super Team: Multi-box per multi-player team with organized splitting strategies and designated topic experts and a fully-developed intra-team language.

Team: A semi-formal gathering of players assisting each other with the goal of achieving a winning national bar score. 1 box per player, no references.

Goal - Dominating the local bar
Buddies: Two or more player each with one box sharing answers to dominate the local scene.

Fraternity: Same as buddies but with multiple boxes. I would add that these groups tend to be more territorial.

Gang: Same as buddies, but resorts to using references.

Cartel: Same as fraternity, but resorts to using references.

Cartels and Fraternities tend to ensure their local domination by controlling the supply of boxes too.

Goal - Local Hi scores / National rankings
Solo: Individual playing one box.

Cutthroat: Individual playing multiple boxes.

Rogue: Individual using references - includes those who witness a game at a bar set on an earlier time zone and then go to another bar to display their short term memory skills.

Goal - Players Plus points
Regulars: One box players who stay long periods of time at the bar to accumulate points.

Gluttons: Multi-box players who use multiple boxes solely to double or triple their rates of pplus points accumulation.

Goal - Fun
Fans: One box player having fun

Zealot: Multibox player having fun

This reminds me of a BadBart posting of mine a couple of years ago that related various combinations of players and playmakers seen:

Company [Not So] Happy Hour - Usually gives themselves away by at least one forgetting to take off their I.D. badge. Often try to put the company name as the Playmaker handle.

Usually doomed to failure when competing with above average individuals since some supervisor or the other that can't leave their authority back in the office appoints themselves *team captain*, then compounds the problem by handing the Playmaker to someone else with "Here, *you* push the buttons!". Other phrases heard include "I told you so!" and "Why didn't you say so??"

Families - Two major variations. If the kids are very young then the Playmaker serves as a surrogate baby sitter; the parents don't seem to mind the -250's. However, once the kids are of around junior high age or older, then suddenly family honor takes priority and the family name becomes the Playmaker handle.

To say the least there have been plenty of cries of consternation from such families when they find out to their utter chagrin that the player playing as liljol or various members of The South Park Gang is all by his lonesome...

Double Dinner Dates - Usually wind up as more or less friendly competition amongst either the two couples, or males versus females [though admittedly at the lone women's bar in San Diego that has NTN, all the participants are female...or so it would seem, anyway...].

liljol, who often finds these interactions more than a lil amusing...

Kinda funny. When I played at Jimmy's in Portland a few weeks ago (with LilJol there as well), I discovered they use the term "Rack It" to mean "Take it to the Bank," "Trust Me," "I Know This One." etc. I shared that with my Barkley's team, and several of us have started saying "Rack It."
That ended up funny in last night's Passport, when George (Otz) precalled an answer as "Tennis." Except he shouted out "Tennis Rack It".
