Can anyone shed some light on why bar scores tend to drop sharply after a certain point in the night (generally about 10:30 PM Central)? We'll have an average of perhaps 9,000 in a Countdown, and rank 800th or something, and an hour later with the same scores rank in the top 50 or better. There may be more players during "prime time", but these are bars that we're talking about here. There are still a few thousand people playing.
Is it because all of the Buffalo Wild Wings close at 10 PM or something? I doubt it; the drops are too drastic. Besides, by the time I start noticing the drops, it's still only 8 or 9 PM on the West Coast.
Perhaps the strangest thing I've noticed about this phenomenon is that when the scores drop, 15 or more of the top 20 bars are Canadian. Does everyone in Canada go to bed later than us Yanks or something? The time zones don't change north-south, after all.

I assumed this was due to the fact that (by, say, 10 pm central) many more players are drunk -- plus a lot of the top players are grey panthers who don't stay out past 11 pm.
But perhaps there are technical reasons. |

In response to FSHADE's question:
The later the evening goes on, people go home because they're either too drunk and/or too sleepy and tired. Also, some people have to be up early for work the next morning! This is especially true on weeknights (Monday to Thursday nights).
I have noticed the dropoff in scores to be not as drastic when it comes to nighttime scores during the weekends (Friday and Saturday nights). That's because people tend to stay out later on those nights.
Besides, the more drunker you get, there's a good chance that your score will suffer. But by that time, most drinkers really don't care how high they score!
Another to thing to remember is that there are not as many NTN locations on the Pacific Standard Time Zone, compared to the Central or Eastern Standard Time Zones. (Of course, there's a lot less in the Mountain Standard time zone, but that goes without saying!)
As for the abundance of Canadian bar location in the rankings during the late evening hours, I can only figure that they have a lot more NTN Trivia locations (per capita) than the U.S. Either that, or they have little else to do other than playing trivia!

I'm not sure if this is the same phenomenon, but occasionally during (east coast) happy hour games, you'll see something similar, where bar scores of 7000 make the top 20, and 10-15 of the top 20 bars are from Ontario. Sometimes, there are only 16 or 17 bars total on the top 20 list. That's always made me think it was a glitch with the reporting...I mean, there's no way there are only 17 bars with players at 5 PM ET, and then only half of those in the USA.

There are times in the NTN schedule when a particular time zone will get a special game -- like Topix. None of the locations in that time zone will show up in the rankings displayed in the other time zones.
Also, just before Showdown, we get a West Coast only game or two. I believe that is because the sites in the other time zones are getting a game with a special theme or format. That plays a role in some of the odd score reporting you may see.
As was stated, the later it is, the less likely you are to find people playing NTN. The places where I've played NTN cater to a different crowd after 9 or 10 PM; in the afternoon and early evening, the crowd tends to be "a drink after-work" group and families -- groups more likely to play NTN. Later, the bar area gets crowded with what I'd describe as Yuppies.
Take care, Don
